Where: The Vanderheyden Bell, The Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel, Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, NY
Bells Across New York for the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.)
The Friends of Oakwood Cemetery and Willard Camp 154, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) will be participating in a memorial event, Bells Across New York for the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). The presentation of our National Colors along with a ceremonial bell ringing and musket salute [by the 125th New York Volunteer Infantry Civil War reenacting unit] will done at noon on April 9 at the Vanderheyden Bell near the Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel. The Friends and Oakwood Cemetery are cooperating with locations across the State to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the formation of the GAR by ringing a bell over a one minute period. The Grand Army of the Republic was formed by the Union Veterans of the Civil War (Army, Navy, Marines and Revenue Cutter Service) in order for them to maintain communications with each other and to give a political voice to the veterans. It was formed on April 6, 1866 on the principles of "Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty." Thus 2016 is the Sesquicentennial, or 150th, Anniversary of the formation of the GAR. The GAR advocated for Memorial Day as a National Holiday.
